MEET WITH BYU LACROSSE TEAM

Nevada State Bank plans to host a food drive to benefit the Las Vegas Rescue Mission through Nov. 8. Nonperishable food items can be dropped off at any Nevada State Bank branch location in the Las Vegas Valley.

Suggested donation items include instant potatoes, canned vegetables, rice, pasta, canned/instant soup, ramen noodles, cranberries/cranberry sauce, stuffing and other nonperishable food items.

GREAT CLIPS OFFERS FREE HAIRCUTS TO MILITARY ON VETERANS DAY

Great Clips salon franchises nationwide plan to give away haircuts to active or retired military members on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. ARBOR VIEW HIGH TO HOST ‘THE LARAMIE PROJECT’

Arbor View High School’s International Thespian Troupe and the Northwest Career and Technical Academy are set to put on a joint production of “The Laramie Project” at 6 p.m. Nov. 6-8 at the Northwest Career and Tech Academy, 8200 W. Tropical Parkway, and at 6 p.m. Nov. 13-15 at Arbor View High School, 7500 Whispering Sands Drive.

Producers look to host advocacy groups in the schools’ lobby on production nights and hope the play, which deals with the 1998 death of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyo., can help anchor future human rights awareness weeks at both schools.

SHAKESPEARE INSTITUTE TO OFFER ACTOR CLASSES

The nonprofit Shakespeare Institute of Nevada recently launched a series of acting workshops for Southern Nevada residents focusing on teaching students to try new material and prepare audition pieces while receiving feedback from professional actors and directors. The workshops are suitable for all ages and all acting levels and are planned from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Hollywood Bound Acting Academy, 7220 S. Cimarron Road.

The fee is $80 for 10 classes. The first class is free to audit.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR FREE FURNITURE

Walker Furniture is seeking nomination letters through Dec. 1 on behalf of Clark County individuals and families in need for its Home For The Holidays program. This will mark the 20th consecutive year that Walker Furniture plans to provide families in need with a houseful of new furniture.

This year, the company plans to help 28 families in need. HELP of Southern Nevada will assist with identifying nominated families displaying the most genuine need.

MASTER GARDENERS OFFER WEEKLY TOURS

Master Gardeners offer weekly garden tours from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Demonstration Gardens, 8050 Paradise Road.

Master Gardeners plan to offer free weekly walking tours aimed at teaching visitors about many of the more than 500 plants that grow in harsh Southwestern desert landscapes around Las Vegas.

In addition to scheduled tours, the grounds are open for self-guided tours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays

NO-COST FLU IMMUNIZATION CLINICS PLANNED

The Southern Nevada Immunization and Health Coalition and its partners plan to host multiple no-cost flu immunization clinics through Dec. 7 in the Las Vegas Valley. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months or older get a flu vaccine each year. The 2013-14 flu vaccines will protect against both the H3N2 and the H1N1 flu virus. The clinics will offer flu vaccine on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone age 6 months or older is eligible if they are uninsured or underinsured. Those with health insurance are encouraged to talk to their doctor or pharmacist about getting vaccinated.

HARDEST HIT FUND PROVIDES MORTGAGE HELP

With one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation, Nevada was selected to be a beneficiary of the U.S. Treasury’s Hardest Hit Fund program, which provides assistance to help prevent avoidable foreclosures and keep Nevada homeowners in their homes.

The Nevada Hardest Hit Fund will assist eligible applicants by paying up to a maximum of $1,000 monthly toward their impounded first mortgage payment, including principal, interest, property tax and insurance for up to nine months. The applicant’s contribution will be a minimum of $75 or any amount that exceeds the $1,000 maximum assistance per month.

Applicants must be unemployed and actively looking for work or be able to validate at least a 35 percent reduction in income/wages since 2008 and must be facing imminent default.
