Couple sentenced after teen found in a cage

Two people arrested after their mentally-challenged teen was found in a caged bed have been sentenced.

The incident happened back in October.

Huron County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Steve Bismack responded to a domestic dispute at the home, located on the 3700 block of Minden Road in Paris Township.

After receiving permission, Bismack entered the bedroom and found the 19-year-old in a caged bed.

Deputy Bismack then contacted the Department of Human Services emergency center in which DHS personnel were dispatched to the scene.

Three adults and two children were also removed from the home. The home is for those with special needs and is known as Tolin’s Acres of Angels.

Karen Tolin, 65, and Tim Tolin, 66, were arrested on felony charges, police said. They were the 19-year-old man’s adoptive parents.

The Tolins have been sentenced to 330 days behind bars and will also serve two years of probation. They were sentenced March 17 in a Huron County courtroom.
