Dining pick of the week: Lazy Joe’s Fish & Chips

PICK OF THE WEEK:

LAZY JOE'S FISH & CHIPS

7835 S. Rainbow Blvd. at West Robindale Road, 489-6523

There is something special about fried fish, and Lazy Joe isn't lazy when it comes to preparing his fish. Each item is hand-prepared and cooked to order in soybean oil with a special gluten-free breading. The variety of fish includes cod, haddock, catfish, shrimp, bay scallops, clams, oysters, calamari and soft-shell crab. You request how much you want (two or three fish filets, four or five shrimp), and most orders are served with fries, coleslaw and hush puppies, those savory, deep-fried cornbread balls that are delicious but not gluten-free. There are combo plates starring the Super Combo with choice of fish, plus shrimp, oysters, scallops and clams. Also popular are the chicken finger and popcorn shrimp baskets and sides such as New England clam chowder, deep-fried button mushrooms, onion rings, deep-fried zucchini sticks and the Flowering Onion. Three sandwiches that come with fries and coleslaw are fish, shrimp roll and soft-shell crab. A family pack, with all the trimmings, features 10 fish filets ($49.99) or eight fish and 16 shrimp for $59.99. Fish entrees begin at $6.99 and sandwiches at $7.99. Lazy Joe's is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday. -- Jack Bulavsky
