Dining Pick of the Week: The Fat Greek
PICK OF THE WEEK:
THE FAT GREEK
4001 S. Decatur Blvd. at Flamingo Road, 222-0666
Steve and Eugenia Vieths have taken over The Fat Greek, and once you taste Eugenia's avgolemono soup (chicken, lemon, rice), desserts and dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), you'll want to eat there every day. While Eugenia is preparing the meals, Steve is greeting guests at the redecorated restaurant that has become a lunchtime favorite. Sandwiches include gyro, grilled chicken, Philly gyro, falafal, veggie lavash wrap and Greek hamburger. Among the large salads are Fat Greek (romaine, tomatoes, cucumber, feta, red onion, Kalamata olives), Athenian pasta and Caesar. Popular appetizers are fried calamari, spanakopita, falafel plate and homemade hummus. Several specialty dishes are lamb shank, moussaka (roasted eggplant casserole), seafood pasta and pasticcio (pasta baked with meat sauce). Grilled entrees are chicken, beef or lamb shish kebab, lule kebab (ground beef with rice pilaf), jumbo shrimp and keftedakia, traditional Greek beef patties with herbs and oregano. Desserts include Napoleon, chocolate-covered vanilla meringues, baklava, tiramisu and chocolate marble truffle cake. Sandwiches start at $6.95, dinner entrees at $12.95. The Fat Greek is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday. -- Jack Bulavsky
