Dining pick of the week: Winchell’s Pub
PICK OF THE WEEK:
WINCHELL'S PUB
5445 Simmons st. at Ann Road,
636-4949
A pub is another word for a bar, typically thought of as the local corner bar in Great Britain. This isn't Great Britain, but this is a great pub with an even greater grill. Half-pound, ground chuck hamburgers come with fries, coleslaw, cottage cheese, potato salad or homemade chips. Other sandwiches are chicken club, prime rib French dip, triple decker Reuben, tuna melt on grilled rye, San Fran grilled cheese on Parmesan-crusted sourdough and Winchell's Grinder (salami, mortadella, prosciutto, mozzarella, onions and pepperocinis with oil and vinegar on ciabatta). Dinner entrees, served from 5 to 11 p.m., include chicken fried steak, calf's liver, cabbage rolls, meatloaf with Parmesan garlic mashed potatoes, halibut fish and chips, Dixie fried chicken, 12-ounce rib-eye with Jack Daniel's peppercorn mushroom sauce, spaghetti and meatballs, and 10-inch, thick-crust pizzas. Breakfast is available from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. (until noon Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday) and features assorted omelets (Denver, chili and cheese), egg dishes (Benedict, corned beef hash, huevos rancheros), egg bread French toast, and biscuits and gravy. Save room for Winchell's homemade desserts. Sandwiches start at $5.49 and omelets at $6.49. Winchell's is open 24/7. -- Jack Bulavsky
