Finding ‘Salvation’

Susan Gregg Gilmore tells a heartwarming tale with Southern flavor in “Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen.”
Catherine Grace Cline is desperate to escape the small-town life of Ringgold, Ga. A place that she says never felt right, “like a sweater that fits too tight under your arms.” She gets Dilly Bars at the Dairy Queen and daydreams about life in the big city of Atlanta.
Catherine Grace was raised by her preacher daddy alone, but found a confidante in a neighbor, Gloria Jean. It’s with Gloria Jean’s help that Catherine Grace is finally able to say goodbye to her tiny town, leaving behind her daddy, little sister, Martha Ann, and the boy she loves, Hank.
Though homesick, Catherine Grace finds a place to live and a job, but tragedy soon strikes and she is forced to return home, only to find a destiny she never imagined.
Gilmore’s infusion of everything Southern in this book will make readers who are from that region feel right at home, especially the familiar and comforting language.
The story is touching and sweet, with Catherine Grace’s journey reminding readers of the importance of independence, family and knowing where you come from. As the inside book jacket says, “Sometimes you have to return to the place where you began, to arrive at the place where you belong.”
