Former NPRI leader Matthews running for Heck’s congressional seat

The former president of a conservative policy group announced his candidacy Monday for Nevada‘s 3rd Congressional District.

Andy Matthews, former president of of the private Nevada Policy Research Institute, is seeking the Republican nomination to replace Rep. Joe Heck, who is running for the open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Minority Leader Harry Reid.

Matthews in his announcement tried to distinguish himself from state Sen. Michael Roberson, who is also running. Matthews called the Senate majority leader a "liberal" who "stuck" Nevadans with the largest tax increase in state history by supporting Gov. Brian Sandoval‘s $1.1 billion tax package.

Danny Tarkanian, the son of the late legendary UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, announced his candidacy for the seat last week.
