Found severed bear head was legally hunted

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A severed bear head discovered in a Steamboat Springs neighborhood came from a bear that was legally hunted.

The head was found Thursday, ironically on Bear Drive at Val d’Isere Circle.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today reports that Colorado Parks and Wildlife determined that the head came from a bear legally hunted.

The investigation determined that the hunter severed the head in preparation for tanning the hide. The hunter put the head in a tree where he thought it would be safe, but something got to it.

Wildlife officer Steve Baumgartner says a dog or another bear was the likely culprit.
