From camps to books to outdoor activities, spring break is set in Centennial Hills

April marks the start of spring break for many students. In an effort to accommodate families, several Centennial Hills organizations plan to offer day camps and activities for youths.

SPRING CAMPS

Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, invites parents to enroll children ages 6-11 in Kids Kamp. The day camp includes field trips, sports, special events, arts and crafts, nutrition, physical fitness and games, under the supervision of trained staff members.

Sessions are planned from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday April 14-18. The cost is $75 per child for the week. For more information, call 702-229-1607.

The Centennial Hills YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, is scheduled to host Spring Break Camp for children ages 5-14 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 14-18. Parents can register their children for the full week or a day or two.

“The camp focuses on character development, physical fitness and activities,” said Cheryl Bella, director of marketing and communications at the YMCA of Southern Nevada. “Children are grouped by age, and we have a different activity each day. We focus on providing a safe environment where parents know their kids will have fun, meet new friends and have caring adults looking out for them.”

Activities include physical activities, exercise, games and arts and crafts. The cost is $145 per week or $47 per day. There is a $40 individual or $55 family program one-time registration fee for nonmembers. For more information, call 702-478-9622.

ICE SKATING AND ROLLERSKATING

Families looking to cool off during the spring heat can head to Fiesta Rancho SoBe Ice Arena, 2400 N. Rancho Drive. Public ice skating is offered from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays.

The arena also offers a Cosmic DJ Skate Night, scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays at the Fiesta Rancho SoBe Ice Arena, 2400 N. Rancho Drive.

“This is a unique activity to do, especially if you live in the desert,” said Camilla Nilsson, skating director for the arena. “It’s fun for all ages, and it’s a great way to exercise.”

Crystal Palace Skating Center, 4680 Boulder Highway, is set to host “No School - Let’s Skate” April 14-18.

Admission for the event is $9 with skates and $10 without skates, which includes two slices of pizza and a soft drink.

NATURE AND OUTDOORS ACTIVITIES

Horses4Heroes, a national nonprofit equestrian military service group at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road, is set to hold entry-level horseback riding lessons and a Mommy & Me class from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

The entry-level horseback riding lessons are $20 per 45-minute lesson with a $5 sibling discount for those ages 7 or older.

“Children can learn how to ride a horse and about horse care and horsemanship,” said Sydney Knott, founder of the organization. “This is a good way for children to get fresh air and exercise.”

The mommy and me class is designed for toddlers and preschoolers ages 18 months to 6 years. The 45-minute class is $20 per family.

“The Mommy & Me class is like a Gymboree-styled class with horses,” Knott said. “Kids learn the fundamentals of horseback riding, and we take them on nature hikes around the park.”

The Centennial Hills YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, is scheduled to host a Green Thumb Earth Day Celebration event from 6 to 7 p.m. April 22.

Families are invited to decorate pots and create small plants for the kitchen window. Each family will receive a free mini plant to grow at home. The event is free to program participants and members.

The Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, 8103 Racel St., is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

The sanctuary is home to birds, pigs, goats, llamas, donkeys, reptiles and more.

EDUCATIONAL

The parking lot at the Centennial Hills Library, 6711 N. Buffalo Drive, is scheduled to host the Digital Bookmobile from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 12. The bookmobile will include music, children story times, crafts and hands-on time with digital devices.

“It’s one big rolling bus that offers more of a hands-on experience on how to explore and download e-books from the library,” said Kristine Segura, adults service librarian at the library.

The story room inside the Centennial Hills Library is also scheduled to host a Marvel Superhero Day event from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 16.

The free event invites children to dress up as their favorite Marvel superhero while making crafts and listening to stories. Space is limited for all Centennial Hills Library programs.

“The library is a nice place for families to relax and take a break,” Segura said.

The Centennial Hills YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, is scheduled to host a Healthy Kids Day from 10 a.m. to noon April 26. Families can enjoy interactive games, face painting, entertainment, a vendor fair and demonstrations.
