Gateway to Sloan Canyon

While Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area is called “the hidden jewel” of Southern Nevada, Inspirada residents J.T. and Olivia Reynolds can see it almost every day and frequently visit the site with their friend Sandy Dyan.

They are all active members of Friends of Sloan Canyon, an organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the 48,438-acre site just south of the Inspirada master-planned community.

“You can see the Sistine Chapel of Native American rock art,” said J.T., pointing to peaks surrounding Petroglyph Canyon. “There are more than 1,700 petroglyphs on more than 300 rock art panels created by ancient people who came before us.”

The Reynolds wanted to stay in the southwest after retirement, and found their perfect home in Inspirada, the “gateway to Sloan Canyon.” They both volunteer to work with middle school students, using Sloan Canyon as an outdoor classroom.

“It’s gratifying to see these kids become aware of this treasure in their own backyards,” said Olivia. “You’ve got geology, cultural resources, natural resources, flora and fauna, all here in Sloan Canyon, right next door to Inspirada,” J.T. said.

“It’s absolutely amazing that any place so ancient is still in such pristine condition,” said Dyan. “That’s why it is so important for the community to advocate for the preservation of Sloan Canyon.”
