‘Haunting Jasmine’ part love story, part ghost story

After a devastating divorce and a particularly stressful time at her high-powered financial management job, Jasmine Mistry agrees to return to Shelter Island to help her beloved aunt run her bookstore. Though getting away would give Jasmine a chance to regroup, she doesn’t expect she'll heal her heart or ever find love again.

“Haunting Jasmine” by Anjali Banerjee is a charming novel of second chances and getting a little help from some long-dead authors.

When Jasmine arrives at Auntie’s Bookstore, she finds the Victorian Queen Anne home filled to the rafters with out-of-date books, relics that Auntie claims belonged to authors from long ago, and the odd customer lounging in unexpected corners and aisles. Determined to change her aunt’s business around, Jasmine sets out to modernize the shop, only to find that the store has a mind of its own and stubbornly holds to its old ways. Could there be a ghost or two hanging around the bookshelves?

When she encounters the ruggedly handsome Connor Hunt, Jasmine becomes intrigued with the mysterious doctor. Despite encouragement from the spirits of Jane Austen, Rudyard Kipling and even Edgar Allen Poe, Jasmine must find out the truth about Connor herself, and when she does, the truth could either break her heart or help her move on to a fresh new life.

“Haunting Jasmine” is part love story, part ghost story, and all in all a thoroughly entertaining tale that will leave readers happy and satisfied by the surprising end. Banerjee intertwines traditions of her Bengali ancestry throughout the story, giving the tale an exotic twist that is as spicy and comforting as the delicious Indian dishes that are so appetizingly described. This is a book destined to become a perennial favorite with romance readers as well as fans of otherworldly tales.
