1. Fundraising for James Journey: An inaugural Trunk or Treat & Car Show is planned from 3 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Open Box Buy store, 9850 S. Maryland Parkway. The free family event is to benefit James Journey, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor after his seventh birthday. 2. Hot Air Balloon Festival: The event is set from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Oct. 23-25, on the campus of Southern Hills Hospital, 9300 W. Sunset Road. Hot air balloon morning launches and passenger rides, tethered balloon rides, kids' activities, evening glow shows, amusement rides and carnival games are planned, along with a special Saturday health fair showcasing Southern Hills and community health partners and including flu shots, blood pressure checks and more. The event will benefit Nevada high school students interested in the health care field through the High School to Healthcare scholarship program and The Public Education Foundation. 3. Henderson Oktoberfest: The city's inaugural salute to German heritage is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St. Food trucks, merchandise, beverages and live music by The Dummkopfs and Oompoporama are planned. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 the day of the event. Attendees must be 21 or older. 4. Fall festival: The Blue Diamond Fall Festival is planned at 5 p.m. Oct. 24 in the village's Rec Hall. A dinner of pit roast pork and turkey, beans, potatoes, salads and desserts is set to be offered. A silent auction is planned. All proceeds support the Blue Diamond Recreation Association and Volunteer Fire Department. A rummage sale is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and children's activities are planned in the park adjacent to the hall at 2 p.m. The cost for the dinner and auction is $15 for adults and $7 for children. The small town is located within the confines of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, about 20 minutes west of Las Vegas.

Tots Trick or Treat Trail: The event is slated from 10:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 22 at the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. Participants of all ages can go trick-or-treating in their costumes. Trunk or treat: Kiddie Academy of Henderson is set to host it Halloween Trunk-or-Treat event from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at 870 Coronado Center Drive. The event is free and open to the public. Stockings 4 Our Troops: The American Sewing Guild's Las Vegas chapter and the Blue Star Mothers NV4 plan to make holiday stockings for deployed troops from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at Gaudin Ford, 6625 Roy Horn Way. Different stations will be set up along an assembly line to complete the stockings mass production style. The goal is to sew 200 stockings. Blue Star Mothers is collecting items and addresses to send to troops. Collection containers can be found throughout Henderson City Hall, businesses on Water Street and at the Henderson Parks and Recreation centers through November. Pug-O-Rama: The Halloween party and picnic is set to feature pug costume contests, prizes, unique pug items, a bake sale, retail booths, a silent auction and a raffle from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Silver Springs Recreation Center Amphitheater, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway. The event helps the Southern Nevada Pug Rescue raise funds for spaying, neutering, shots, exams and other medical necessities that take place when a rescue pug is brought into the organization. Rockin' Art of Sloan Canyon: In partnership with the city of Henderson and the Friends of Sloan Canyon, the Inspirada community invites valley residents to participate in the inaugural contest. Photography and artwork must be inspired by the ancient art, geology, cultural and natural resources and flora and fauna of the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. The categories are: photography for participants 15 or older; photography for high school students; and two artwork categories for elementary and middle school students. The public is encouraged to vote for favorite entries during the People's Choice judging period, which will identify 26 winners, determined by the entries that receive the most likes at facebook.com/inspiradanv. A judging panel will identify one contestant from the winners as the Best of Show grand prize recipient. The People's Choice winners will be awarded $25 gift cards, and the Best of Show winner will receive a $250 gift card to David Clawson restaurant, 2840 Bicentennial Parkway. The Farm Fall Festival: Barn Buddies Rescue @ The Farm is planning its Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 24-25 and Oct. 31 at The Farm, 7222 W. Grand Teton Drive. Squash and pumpkins, rescued animals, a farm train, pony rides, a toddler maze and a hay wagon are planned. HallOVeen: Visitors of all ages are invited to see the Magical Forest's walkthroughs and rides transformed into a spooky land of goblins and ghosts from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 1, at Opportunity Village, 6300 W. Oakey Blvd. The last week of October, the attraction is set to be open from 5:30 to 9 p.m. nightly. Nov. 1 is set to feature a Day of the Dead theme. Attractions include a zombie quarantine area, the No Hope Hospital, the Zombie Clown Circus, haunted trails and a haunted train ride. Magician Dixie Dooley is set to perform nightly. "Breathe Onto the Mirror": The exhibit by Jacqueline Ehlis is planned to run through Nov. 8 at The Studio at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Ehlis is the chairwoman of the art department at Portland Community College, and her work incorporates the interaction of color, light and reflection, reminding the viewer that they are the vehicle that interprets and is part of the works through their reflection in the mirrors. "It Happened Like This": The free annual exhibition of mostly local artists, including Richard Hooker, Kim Johnson and C.A. The workshop is designed for growers and small food producers looking to diversify their marketing activities by taking advantage of the growing consumer demand for local foods. Free gardening class: University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Jodi Starkey plans to lead the session at 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at Acacia Park, 50 Casa Del Fuego St. Attendees will learn to prepare their yards for winter, which can expose gardens to extreme fluctuations in temperature. Fine art paint parties: City Lights Art Gallery, 3 E. Army St., plans to host the events from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 14 and 28 for up to 10 participants. Artists are set to lead the events.
