HENDERSON ANNOUNCES
HOLIDAY CLOSURES

The city of Henderson plans to close City Hall on Monday in observance of New Year's Day. Recreation facilities also will be closed Sunday and Monday.

Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., is scheduled to be closed until Monday. For more information, visit cityofhenderson.com.

Christmas tree recycling available

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to recycle their Christmas trees. From now through Jan. 16, residents can drop their trees off during regular park hours at six Henderson locations: Acacia Park, 50 Casa Del Fuego St.; Anthem Hills Park, 2256 N. Reunion Drive; Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Drive; Morrell Park, 500 Harris St.; Pecos Legacy Park, 150 Pecos Road; and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive. Participation is free.

Participants should remove all nonorganic material from the trees, including lights, ornaments, wires, tinsel and nails. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.

The Parks and Recreation Department plans to chip the trees into mulch and use the mulch in parks and landscaping around Henderson municipal buildings.

WINTERFEST BREAKS ATTENDANCE RECORD

More than 35,000 residents came out to the city's annual WinterFest celebration Dec. 9-10, setting a record, according to the city of Henderson's cultural arts and tourism department.

The city also announced the first-place winners from the various WinterFest contests. McCaw School of Mines won for best parade float; Foothill High School won first place for the marching band, special interest vehicle and equestrian category; and Empowered Life Church won the festival of trees.

Two winners were announced for the g ingerbread house contest. Old-fashioned Christmas at the Ranch won in the individual and family category, and PTA Families of Walker School won the best school and organization categories.

Learning Resources network honors city's park and recreation department

The Parks and Recreation Department at the city of Henderson was honored for excellence in marketing by the Learning Resources Network. LERN reviewed the department's community outreach, public relations, media relations, marketing, electronic communication and Henderson Happenings. Henderson's program was chosen from a field of more than 100 entries from four countries.

Police officers, Target team up
for shop with a cop event

The Henderson Police Officers' Association held its annual Shop With A Cop event Dec. 10. Police officers took local children on a shopping trip and to see Santa Claus. The event took place in partnership with Target.

SEMINAR to teach COMPUTER BASICS

An introduction to computers seminar has been scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 4 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway. Participants can expect to learn how to use a computer and basic components of Microsoft Windows 7. The event is free. Class size is limited to 12 people and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

AT ROADMAP to success SERIES

The Roadmap to Success series, hosted by the Henderson Chamber of Commerce and Henderson Business Resource Center, is scheduled to offer its next Roadmap to Success seminar from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Jan. 5 at the resource center, 112 S. Water St.

The scheduled topic is "Tax Strategies and Updates: Small Business Can Save Big." There is no cost for chamber members. Nonmembers pay $25.

CHEER CLINIC PREPARES CHILDREN
FOR CHEERLEADING LEAGUE

The city of Henderson is planning to host a cheer clinic from 10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 7 at the Downtown Recreation Center, 105 W. Basic Road.

The clinic is coed and is expected to help prepare children for the Youth Cheerleading League. Children are expected to learn hand movements, cheers, chants, jumps and kicks.

The event is open to children 5 to 15 and is free.

GARDEN CLUB to host MONTHLY MEETING

The Sunset Garden Club is scheduled to host its monthly meeting at noon Jan. 10 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Master Gardeners Lisa Mosbey and Jeanne Marie Toscano are scheduled to present at the meeting. The event is free and open to the public.

The GWFC Green Valley Woman's Club business meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 at Findlay Toyota, 7733 Eastgate Road. This meeting is set to be a new member celebration. TRAIL TOUR OFFERED TO SHOWCASE PARKS

The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is scheduled to host a trails tour from 8 to 10 a.m. Jan. 21 starting at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway.

The bus tour highlights current and upcoming parks and trails in Henderson. The event is free and open to people 14 or older. Space is limited.
