HENDERSON to offer TREE recycling
The city of Henderson is encouraging residents to recycle their Christmas trees after the holiday season.
People can drop off their trees from Sunday to Jan. 17 at Acacia Park, 50 Casa Del Fuego St.; Anthem Hills Park, 2256 N. Reunion Drive; Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.; Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Drive; Morrell Park, 500 Harris St.; Pecos Legacy Park, 150 Pecos Road ; and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.
All nonorganic materials such as lights, ornaments and wires must be removed before dropping off the trees. For more information, visit cityofhenderson.com.
ADULT WINTER GAMES OPENS REGISTRATION
The adult winter softball leagues, sponsored by the city of Henderson's parks and recreation department, are scheduled to open Jan. 7.
Registration is $450 per team and can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.

YOUTHS ENCOURAGED TO TRY OUT FOR CONCERT SERIES
The Henderson Symphony Orchestra welcomes young musicians to audition for the 17th annual Young Artists Concert. Applications are due Jan. 13 and carry a $35 fee. Auditions are scheduled for Jan. 28. For more information, visit hendersonsymphony.org.
POST OFFICE COLLECTS TOYS FOR HOLIDAYS
Henderson post offices are expected to have a toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots until Dec. 18. Gifts should be new and unwrapped. From 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., people can drop the toys off at four Henderson post office locations: 404 Boulder Highway, 1575 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, 3055 St. Rose Parkway and 2722 N. Green Valley Parkway.
ST. ROSE GETS DONATION FROM SMITH'S
Smith's Food and Drug donated $200,000 to the St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation.
The contributions are expected to help assist families that struggle to pay their child's medical costs after trauma or serious illness.
The money raised came from Smith's associates' contributions, customer donations at the check stands and the Smith's annual vendor golf tournament.
LOCAL STUDENTS TO PLAY AT GALLERIA
The Las Vegas Music Teachers Association is sponsoring citywide music events to raise money for the Blind Center of Nevada, 1001 N. Bruce St., and Rockin Music Zoo. The Blind Center provides music education to the visually impaired. The Rockin Music Zoo is a nonprofit organization that provides music education to underprivileged youths.
The final event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road. The Play-A-Thon started Nov. 30 and features local students playing holiday music. Students have performed at the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village, the Springs Preserve and more.

MEMORIAL FUND TO HELP COVER FORMER WEATHERMAN'S BURIAL COSTS
The ashes of former Las Vegas weatherman John Fredericks, who died Nov. 23, will be placed next to his beloved canine companion, Jordan, at the Craig Road Pet Cemetery, 7450 W. Craig Road, according to the wishes of his family. His name will also be added to Jordan's headstone, along with a photo of John and Jordan. A memorial fund has been set up at Nevada State Bank to help cover Fredericks' burial costs. The account number is 0588016311 and the routing number is 122400779.
Fredericks was Channel 3's morning weatherman from 1995 to 2008. Jordan, a golden retriever, was a presence on the show for many years and accompanied Fredericks as he championed animal causes across the country.
RADIOTHONS TO BENEFIT FOOD BANK
Three Square's Fight Holiday Hunger program is happening through Dec. 31.All cash contributions are to be matched dollar for dollar by partners with the bank.
As part of Fight Holiday Hunger, radiothons are planned from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. For two days, KJUL 104.7 FM is asking listeners to phone in monetary donations. Also, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, X107.5 FM and Ultimate Fighting Championship plan to host a radiothon in the parking lot at Walmart, 7200 Arroyo Crossing Parkway. Morning radio personalities Dave Farra and Jason Mahoney will welcome special on-air guests, including UFC fighters, who will sign autographs and meet with fans. X107.5 will be asking for nonperishable food items and/or cash and check donations.
