MASTER GARDENERS SCHEDULE
TWO CLASSES for aug. 3

The Clark County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are scheduled to host two classes on Aug. 3.

The first is planned at 10:30 a.m. at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, on an introduction to gardening.

Carolyn Ellsworth is slated to speak at the second class on gardening in a small space at 1:30 p.m. at the Gibson Library, 100 W. Lake Mead Parkway.

Classes are free and open to the public. Registration is required.

SUPERRUN SEEKS ARTISTS
FOR HUBCAP GALLERY

The city of Henderson is seeking artists for its second annual SuperRun Hubcap Art Gallery, which is scheduled for Sept. 27-29 at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 S. Water St.

Participants are encouraged to transform hubcaps into art pieces. Hubcaps cost $5 and can be purchased until Aug. 28.

HENDERSON ANNOUNCED AS MEGA SUBURB

The city of Henderson was recently announced as one of “America’s 19 Mega Suburbs” by SML, a nationwide moving and labor service provider.

SML looked at public safety, low crime rates, location and population growth.

HENDERSON RECEIVES GOLD MEDAL AWARD

For the second consecutive year, the city of Henderson’s parks and recreation department was named a finalist for the Gold Medal Award.

The award is given by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.

The gold medal honors communities that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation management.

Henderson ranks in the class 1 category, which includes populations of 250,000 or more.

SEEKS NONPROFIT as a partner

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce Leadership Henderson program is accepting applications from nonprofits and schools.

One program is expected to be selected for the 2014 class of Leadership Henderson to work with as a partner.

PROGRAM TO TEACH ABOUT DIABETES

The Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, is scheduled to host a program on diabetes at 10 a.m. Aug. 2.

The Stanford Medical School’s Diabetes Self-Management Program is expected to teach people skills to deal with symptoms of diabetes such as fatigue and pain.

The seminar is scheduled to repeat Aug. 9 and Aug. 16.

SOUTHERN NEVADA STRONG schedules COMMUNITY MEETINGS

Southern Nevada Strong is inviting the community to attend open houses to gather resident input.

The organization is a regional planning initiative looking to improve transportation, housing and job opportunities in Southern Nevada.

Open houses are scheduled at
2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.;
5:30 to 7:30 Aug. 7 at the Desert Breeze Community Center, 8275 Spring Mountain Road; 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway; 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Elaine K. Smith Center, 700 Wyoming St.; 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Mary & Sam Boyd Boys & Girls Club, 1608 Moser Drive; and a Spanish-speaking event from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Downtown Boys & Girls Club; 2801 E. Stewart Ave.
