Improvements at Cashman Field only temporary

Tonight the El Paso Chihuahuas will christen their new $74 million downtown ballpark that was built with public money.

Capital improvements appear to be under way at Cashman Field, too.

Those portable toilets in the photo went up outside the 51s outdoor batting cage down the right-field line over the weekend.

Good, I thought. Utility infielders learning how to go the other way won’t have to drop their bats and sprint back to the clubhouse in case of an emergency.

Alas, I have learned the portable toilets are not related to a Cashman Field improvement project.

A team official said they were put there to assist baseball fans attending pregame parties on the grassy knoll in the parking lot during the Tacoma series.
