MOVIES: Special Screenings — Blacklist Fest finds a home for horror
October 27, 2009 - 11:28 am
Halloween weekend starts early in Las Vegas — and so does the Halloween horror movie onslaught.
Fangoria's Trinity of Terrors at the Palms will rule the weekend, but on Thursday night, Oct. 30, the Blacklist Art and Film Festival kick-starts the haunt, combining art with a showcase of award-winning horror shorts.
The event takes place downtown at the Griffin Bar & Lounge, 511 Fremont St. The horror films will screen at 7 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and midnight; admission is $5. The art showcase, featuring live painting, is free and will be presented from 8:30 to 10:15 p.m.
"We support unapologetic and fearless creativity," organizer Jeff Speed says of the Blacklist festival, which began in the Lake Tahoe area and has expanded to San Diego before hitting Sin City.
Although horror is "a big moneymaker" for Hollywood, it's usually "zombie movie after zombie movie after zombie movie, vampire movie after vampire movie after vampire movie," Speed comments. "They want to go for the safe bucks, but there are new ways of storytelling."
