Nevada PERS in trouble
February 19, 2010 - 7:10 am
This story about a Pew Center study that finds the pension plan for public workers in Nevada has some "serious concerns" is something that bears scrutiny.
The executive director of PERS says it's not true because half of the monthly PERS contribution is paid for by the employee's public agency.
Which begs the question: What happens if that public entity can't pay or goes BK?
I'd suggest that the Legislature immediately get to the bottom of this. Is PERS in serious trouble, or not? But then, of course, this is the Legislature that faces an $800 million shortfall for a budget it "balanced" less than a year ago. Not much fiscal cred to go around when the solons gather in Carson City on Tuesday, I'm afraid.
