Nevada State College awarded $220,000 for student services

The U.S. Department of Education has offered Nevada State College a $220,000 grant to boost student services, making it the third Las Vegas-area campus to benefit from the federal award and raising the region's funding total to more than $1 million.

The department announced in July that it would be giving $552,000 to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and $248,000 to the College of Southern Nevada. The University of Nevada in Reno also received $344,000. The funding will help the schools develop programs whose goals include helping students achieve financial literacy, good study habits and time management skills.

The grants are part of a nationwide $293 million push to help disadvantaged students finish college.

One of the grants will allocate $220,000 specifically to UNLV's program benefiting students in the fields of science, technology, education and math (STEM).
