New park opens in Summerlin

The master-planned community of Summerlin opened a major community park in The Mesa village during the last week of October, bringing the total number of community parks in Summerlin to 23. The Mesa Park, located at Town Center Drive and Mesa Park Drive encompasses 19 acres and offers recreational opportunities to residents living in the southern region of the community, according to Randy Ecklund, executive director of Summerlin Community Association Management for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin.

“The Mesa Park is now the centerpiece of The Mesa village and provides a place for families and individuals to relax and enjoy their recreational time,” Ecklund said. “As a premier baseball facility, it creates an additional venue to accommodate Little League and other baseball programming in Summerlin. Residents in the area have been eagerly awaiting this park.”

The park features two lighted tennis courts, three Little League baseball fields and concession building, tot lot, picnic ramadas and open play areas. Ecklund expects the park’s Little League fields to begin hosting play in early 2009.

Summerlin is currently home to more than 355 acres of park and open space areas offering recreational amenities in the Southern Nevada master-planned community.

Each of Summerlin’s existing 18 villages is designed around a major community park, or golf course. Many parks feature specific recreational themes such as tennis, baseball, soccer or football.

According to Ecklund, parks are designed to accommodate the diverse interests of residents, who are frequently asked to participate in community surveys that rank the popularity, usability and desirability of specific park amenities.

“Since the amenities are ultimately designed for the residents, their input is extremely valuable in the planning process,” he said.

Summerlin offers more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 22 public and private schools and nearly 100 actively selling floor plans.
