Number of active Nevada voters drops; list maintenance cited

CARSON CITY — The number of active Nevada voters declined in August, with both parties registering losses due mainly to list maintenance, the secretary of state’s office said Thursday.
Active voters declined by 11,876 in August compared with July.
“This decrease is primarily due to the routine list maintenance being carried out statewide, including active voters being moved to inactive status,” the secretary of state’s office said.
Someone is moved to inactive status if they’ve moved and their new address cannot be verified by election officials. Inactive voters are still eligible to cast a ballot provided they meet all legal requirements to vote.
There are 1.33 million active voters in Nevada. Democratic voters number 531,104, or 39.8 percent, while 459,467 or 34.4 percent are registered Republicans. Statewide, Democrats outnumber Republicans by 71,637. In Clark County, the gap is 123,031 in favor of Democrats.
Nearly 19 percent of active Nevada voters, or 261,750, are registered as nonpartisan. About 4 percent affiliate with the Independent American Party, with the Libertarian and members of other minor political parties making up the rest.
The last day to register to vote in the November general election is Oct. 18.
