Obama — the despot in the making

As a companion to today's column, let's think about how liberals have begun to justify President Obama's blatantly unconstitutional use of drones to kill Americans.

First, if you have not done so already, click here and read this morning's column "The Liberal Mind at Work."

Now think about a conversation that took place last week on Chris Matthews' "Hardball" show on MSNBC. It included columnist Eugene Robinson and some other MSNBC hack, all of them arguing that it's OK for President Obama to target Americans for death without any due process, but it wouldn't be a good idea to let the other political side do it -- somebody like, say, Dick Cheney.

We need some safeguards because Obama won't be in the White House forever, Matthews said.

Somebody like Cheney will be back, Robinson chirped.

And there you have it. The liberal mind at work. This is how all the great human atrocities begin -- with despot-leaning liberals (usually) thinking they have some divine right to kill that transcends the law. In this case, Obama's Justice Department has drafted a white paper that essentially says it's OK for Obama to kill anyone the president thinks is plotting against the United States -- whether those thoughts or plots bear any imminent danger to the country or not.

This is flat out unconstitutional in America.

Watch out, fellow citizens. If that's the latitude, this president could kill any American and call it justified. Therefore, we need to get the rationalization of this despot in the making before the U.S. Supreme Court immediately.

PS: Let's not get this conversation mixed up with the use of drones in the war on terrorism. That's a whole different topic for which I would generally stake out the position that drones make good weapons in this kind of war. But what Obama is doing is completely different. He wants to "drone" anyone he thinks is plotting against America, no matter whether those thoughts bear an imminent threat to the country, or not. No president -- left our right -- should ever have than power.
