Onlookers took selfies during Sydney’s deadly hostage situation

Amid a lethal hostage situation in Sydney, onlookers felt it necessary to document the event with photos — by taking selfies. Yes, the kind usually designated for duckfaces and bathroom tours.

A gunman caused panic in an Australian cafe after taking a group of people captive. According to the Associated Press, two people were seen holding Islamic flags inside the cafe.

Police arrived and lit up the scene with stun grenades and gunfire, while passersby snapped a few pics.

“All day people were uploading selfies of themselves on Twitter from as close as possible to where the hostage siege was taking place,” the Daily Mail reports. “Just to make the photos more authentic some even took them with television cameras in the background.”

Three people were killed during the siege, including the gunman, and four were injured.
