SCOTUS ObamaCare ruling: Upheld! Struck down! Upheld!
June 28, 2012 - 6:56 am
By now you know that the Supreme Court ruled on ObamaCare. You just don't know much more.
At least that's the way it seemed 30 minutes after the ruling.
There used to be an old half-serious saying in journalism about breaking news. It was "Get it first; correct it later."
Maybe that should be the new motto for Twitter.
Here are some tweets early-on in the ObamaCare ruling scramble. My favorite was “STRIKES DOWN… UPHOLDS… STRIKES DOWN… DAMN YOU TWITTER” from Former Eric Cantor staffer Brad Dayspring.
Even in this fast-paced world of electronic information, journalism still comes down to reliable, measured assessments. When that happens, I'll let you know.
PS: Judging from the reliability of Twitter so far, it may not be today!
PPS: In the credit where credit due department, AP got it right and if not first pretty damn close to first. Of course, AP's been doing this since the Civil War, so they're pretty good at this sort of thing.
PPPs: CNN got it totally wrong. Had to send out a 180-degree correction. Not good for a news organization already on the ropes.
PPPPS: As promised, here's the best analysis that I have seen on today's ruling. Go with this until something better comes along.
