COMMISSIONER PLANS MEETING REGARDING RED ROCK DEVELOPMENT

Clark County Commissioner for District F Susan Brager has scheduled a community meeting to discuss the waivers developer Jim Rhodes has requested for his planned development in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. SAMPLE ITEMS FOR GIFT BASKETS AT URBAN RANCH

A Holiday Gift Basket Event is planned from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Urban Ranch General Store, 6985 W. Sahara Ave., Suite 105.

Several local artisans and food providers will be on hand for sampling, demonstrations and recipes, including Strawberry Creek and Boulder City Coffee Roasters.

Customers can select various ingredients to make custom gift baskets with expert advice. Then the basket is wrapped up by Urban Ranch staff members and ready to give away for the holidays.

SHOP FOR A GOOD CAUSE AT KIDVILLE

Kidville, 302 N. Rampart Blvd. at Tivoli Village, plans to host an evening shopping event at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The shopping soiree will be complete with complimentary hors d'oeuvres and drinks. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to the Pregnancy Foundation. Additionally, $25 from every class sign-up on that day will go directly to the charity.

CHURCH PLANS FESTIVAL OF NINE LESSONS

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service with a reception following is planned for 5 p.m. Sunday at St. George's Anglican Church, 7676 W. FARMERS MARKET ANNOUNCES NEW HOURS FOR 2012

The fresh52 Farmers Market at Tivoli Village, 302 S. Rampart Blvd., announces new hours for 2012. The market, which will close after this weekend for the holiday season, will operate from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. when it resumes operation on Jan. 7 and 8. DONATE TO BLANKET AND JACKET DRIVE

The Nevada chapter of the Community Associations Institute has teamed with 8-year-old Boulder City resident Blaze Trumble to collect blankets and jackets for the homeless.

The Blanket the Community drive is in its fourth year and runs through Monday. Last year, Blaze spearheaded the effort to collect more than 700 blankets and jackets. This year's goal is 800 blankets and jackets. Blaze regularly celebrates his birthday refusing gifts and instead donating to the less fortunate.

To participate, drop off new or gently used blankets and jackets to these locations: the CAI corporate offices at 9171 W. Flamingo Road, Suite 100; the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, 480 W. Bonanza Road; and the Nevada Association Services offices at 6224 W. Desert Inn Road.

Many blankets already have been delivered. Another batch is being collected for delivery before Christmas.

AREA ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVE GRANTS

The CarMax Foundation awarded $12,500 in grants to Las Vegas organizations to help local youths as part of the foundation's Regional Giving Program.

The Las Vegas-area grant recipients include: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, $5,000; Street Teens, $5,000; and Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, $2,500 for Troop 83's Light Up the Night program, which is aimed at battling cancer.

More than $2.9 million has been donated to local nonprofit organizations across the United States through this program since it was started in 2007.

WALMART SHARES THE WEALTH

Walmart has given $100,000 to the Shade Tree shelter as part of its Associate Choice Award. The Walmart Foundation funds initiatives focused on education, workforce development, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability and health and wellness.

From Feb. 1, 2009, through Jan. 31, 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $512 million in cash and in-kind gifts globally, $467 million of which was donated in the U.S.

OPEN A BUSINESS in las vegas WITH THE CLICK OF A MOUSE

People interested in opening a business in the city of Las Vegas can do so by visiting the city's website, lasvegasnevada.gov. The city of Las Vegas is the first government agency in Southern Nevada to offer customers the ability to apply for a business license online.

Customers also can pay their application fee or renew their current business license online. These new features are part of the city's priority to make it easier to do business with the city of Las Vegas.

PET HOSPITAL COLLECTING PET SUPPLIES

Donate pet supplies to Paradise Pet Hospital, 1060 E. Flamingo Road, during December to help Noah's Animal House provide comfortable lives for pets of women in domestic crisis.

Items needed include: chemical sprayers, paper towels, canned cat and dog food, cat litter, 13-gallon trash bags and doggie pick-up bags. Gift cards to Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, PetSmart and Petco also are appreciated.

Donations can be dropped off at the hospital from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA LAUNCHES HOLIDAY PROGRAMS

HELP of Southern Nevada, 1640 E. Flamingo Road, has launched its Adopt-a-Family program, allowing people to assist needy families in giving them clothing and toys for the holidays.

COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT GROUP TEAMS WITH THREE SQUARE FOR FOOD DRIVE

Three Square food bank, along with Community Management Group and other partners, aims to ease the burden of hunger with its holiday food drive. To help in the collection process, CMG has donated space at its main office as a food drive drop-off location from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3360 W. Sahara Ave., Suite 200.

CMG will collect food on behalf of Three Square through Dec. 20.

DOCS FOR SOCKS CAMPAIGN TO RUN THROUGH DECEMBER

Southwest Medical Associates recently kicked off its Docs for Socks campaign, in partnership with the Clark County School District. The goal is to collect new socks and underwear for students in need in the Las Vegas Valley. Collection boxes are at all Clinic at Walmart locations and Southwest Medical Associates locations throughout Las Vegas. The campaign runs through Dec. 31.
