Summerlin Centre to add new anchors

General Growth Properties, parent company of The Howard Hughes Corp. and developer of the Summerlin master-planned community, announced two additional anchors to the retail line-up at The Shops at Summerlin Centre, the 1.5-million-square-foot regional retail center under development in the heart of the community.

Macy's and Dillard's join anchor Nordstrom, along with specialty home furnishings department store Crate and Barrel as confirmed retailers within the development.

According to John Bucksbaum, chairman and chief executive officer of General Growth, The Shops at Summerlin Centre is scheduled to open on Oct. 16, 2009.

It is expected to include more than 100 retailers, more than 10 restaurants and commercial office space.

Bucksbaum also announced plans to submit The Shops at Summerlin Centre for pre-certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System.

"General Growth embraces sustainability as an intrinsic part of how we do business," he said.

"We are currently implementing a number of green building initiatives at The Shops at Summerlin Centre," he said.

Green building initiatives at The Shops at Summerlin Centre include high-efficiency air conditioning to reduce energy consumption; waste management and recycling programs; white roofs that reduce heat absorption; green cleaning products and building materials to improve air quality; maximization of natural light; tenant guidelines to encourage green practices and compliance throughout the center; easy access to public transportation; and bike racks and showers for employees so they can bike to work.

"Leasing activity is in full swing," Bucksbaum said. "We expect to make more retailer announcements later this year."

The Shops at Summerlin Centre features an outdoor, pedestrian orientation that is going to create a true entertainment destination for residents along the entire western rim of the valley, as well as regionally, according to Bucksbaum.

The Shops at Summerlin Centre plans initially include four anchor retailers and a mix of upscale lifestyle, home and fashion stores that cater to Summerlin and surrounding areas.

Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, Summerlin encompasses 22,500 acres with about 9,000 acres still remaining to accommodate future growth.

The community is currently home to more than 95,000 residents.

The neighborhood has nearly 100 actively selling floor plans.
