Summerlin to hold ice cream festival today

Valley residents are invited to Mix 94.1's Summerlin Kids' Mix and Ice-cream Festival today from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Summerlin Centre Community Park, 1800 S. Town Center Drive.

This free, outdoor event will feature live performances by He is We and Lex Rock, Sergei's Dance Studio, Faith Lutheran High School and Kelly the Clown from Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey.

Activities include a super-soaker zone, rock climbing wall, face painters, balloon artists and mascot visits. Mascots include Summerlin's jackrabbit mascot, Summerlin Sam; Mohave Max; Marvel Comics Spider-Man and THOR; and Vegas Public Broadcasting System's Arthur, Curious George, Buddy from "Dinosaur Train" and Sir Topham Hat from Thomas the Train.

All-you-can-eat ice-cream tickets are $5 per person. A variety of other food and beverage options are available for purchase. Participating vendors include Max Brenner, Funnel Cake Café, Macaroni Shack, CoolJuice, Hapa Haole Hawaiian Shaved Ice, Ladder Truck Pizza, Martino's Grill, Port of Subs, Panda Express and Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

Sponsors will host interactive children's activities at more than 30 different booths. Some of this year's kid-friendly sponsors include Summerlin, Borders, Las Vegas School of Dance and Music and Lied's Children's Discovery Museum.

According to Kevin Orrock, executive vice president of master-planned communities for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, Summerlin Kids' Mix is a great addition to this year's event lineup given the large number of families who live in the community.

"Summerlin is a well-established family-oriented community," he said. "The community has successfully attracted a variety of homebuyers throughout its 20-plus year history, but families continuously represent the largest homebuyer demographic. Families appreciate and frequent the parks, schools, medical and cultural facilities, houses of worship and other community amenities unique to Summerlin. So it's only appropriate we have events that cater to families as well."

To get to Summerlin Centre Community Park from Summerlin Parkway, exit southbound on Town Center Drive. The park is located between West Charleston Boulevard and West Sahara Avenue on the east side of the street.

This year's event is sponsored and coordinated by Summerlin in partnership with CBS Radio Las Vegas.
