DISCUSS WARD 2 CONCERNS AT ANGEL PARK

Join Las Vegas Ward 2 Councilman Bob Beers for an event scheduled for 5 p.m. today at the restaurant at Angel Park Golf Course, 100 S. BUSINESS NETWORK MIXER TO HAVE HALLOWEEN THEME AT SUNCOAST

The Large Vision Business Network Mixer is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive. The theme will be the sixth annual Safe Night Halloween program, featuring more than 50 business exhibits.

JEWISH SINGLES PLAN TO MEET WEDNESDAY

The Jewish Singles 55 Plus Social Club for men and women plans to host its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jewish Community Center building at Temple Sinai, 9001 Hillpointe Road.

COFFEE EVENT FOR PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS

The Westside Newcomers Club plans to host a coffee event for prospective members at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace in the Desert Episcopal Church, 2004 Spring Gate Lane.

The coffee events are planned for the first Wednesday of each month. The social club is for women who have lived in the area for 10 years or less or those who have had a life-changing event, such as retirement. MAKING STRIDES WALK TO RAISE FUNDS
FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Making Strides, a 5K walk to raise money for the fight against breast cancer, is planned for Saturday at the JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. Registration is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m., and the walk is planned from 8 a.m. to noon. New to the event this year is pet participation. Check your dog in at the registration tent with a participation waiver and a $10 donation, and your pet will receive a pink bandana and exclusive access to the canine corral and walk route. LEAP ALLIANCE TO PARTICIPATE
IN TEXAS STATION HEALTH FAIR

The Summerlin-based LEAP Alliance plans to have a booth featured in the health fair scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Texas Station, 2101 Texas Star Lane. Oct. 9 FUNDRAISER TO HELP
FORECLOSED UPON PETS

Foreclosed Upon Pets Inc. plans to host its fourth annual fundraiser from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at the home of Conita and Tom Jones.

The evening will include a beer and wine bar, a buffet, music and a raffle.

Donation is $25 per person, and 100 percent of the donations will benefit FUPI. Raffle tickets are five for $20.

SAHARA WEST LIBRARY TO OFFER
ASTROLOGY CLASS

The Basics of Astrology class is planned for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

The four-week class is a basic introduction to western astrology. If you're interested in receiving your free birth chart to look at, know your date of birth (month, day and year), birth city and country. For the most accurate chart, your exact time of birth (found on your birth certificate of family record) is needed. If you do not know your time of birth, let the instructor know during class.

WALK/RUN TO SUPPORT ALS OF NEVADA

The 12th annual Walk n' Roll and 5K Run for ALS is planned for Oct. 13 at Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way. Registration is set for 6 a.m. and the walk/run for 8 a.m.

Each adult 18 or older is required to donate a minimum of $35 to participate; the cost is $25 per participant for those 5 to 17 and free for children 4 or younger.

Donations support Nevada's ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) patients, their caregivers and their families.

NEW ROTARY CLUB ESTABLISHED

GOODWILL PLANS GOLF TOURNAMENT
AT CANYON GATE COUNTRY CLUB

Goodwill of Southern Nevada plans to host its annual Golf for Goodwill tournament Oct. 15 at Canyon Gate Country Club, 2001 Canyon Gate Drive. Registration is set to begin at 11:30 a.m., with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

COMMUNITY DAY OF SHARING
TO ASSIST FIVE NONPROFITS

Albertsons Sav-on's CommUNITY Day of Sharing will combine five nonprofit groups for a donation drive, culminating Oct. 20.

The effort will unite Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, Three Square food bank, United Way of Southern Nevada and Goodwill of Southern Nevada, with the goal of impacting the lives of those who need help with shelter, food, employment or other basic needs.

Donate gently used clothing, home goods, nonperishable food items and new hygiene products to any Albertsons location from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20.

The Albertsons store at 4055 S. Durango Drive at Flamingo Road will serve as the main event site from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, with music, prizes and a community barbecue planned.

The eighth annual In Pursuit of Excellence Gala is planned for 6:30 to 11 p.m. Nov. 17 at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

It will honor Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace Prize winner and "Night" author Elie Wiesel for his literacy and activism in human rights. Live and silent auctions, a dinner and dancing are planned.

HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA DISTRIBUTES DONATED WATER BOTTLES

HELP of Southern Nevada, in partnership with Whole Foods Market and Real Water, acquired 14,784 bottles of water, or 616 cases, during its HELP2O bottled water drive this summer. 

From June through August, the nonprofit teamed up with all four Whole Foods Market locations in the Las Vegas Valley for the effort. Real Water, a Las Vegas-based bottled water company sold at Whole Foods Market, matched all Real Water purchases made during the campaign.

HELP of Southern Nevada staff members are regularly distributing the bottles to homeless citizens around the valley. The inventory is expected to last into the winter season.

GROUP HELPS WOMEN FACING DIVORCE

Second Saturdays Las Vegas offers a monthly seminar featuring financial advisers, divorce attorneys, family therapists and mediators to guide women through the steps of divorce.

Participants learn in a safe, nonjudgmental environment what to expect and how to make sense of the legal process. Second Saturdays Las Vegas is based on the Second Saturday Divorce Workshops created by The Women's Institute for Financial Education, the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to providing financial education to women with a desire for financial independence.

MASTER GARDENERS PLAN TOURS
OF DEMONSTRATION GARDEN

The Master Gardeners of Southern Nevada plans monthly tours of the Demonstration Gardens at the Clark County/University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. FREE BEREAVEMENT SESSIONS OFFERED
FOR TEENS

The Center for Compassionate Care division of the Nathan Adelson Hospice is offering a series of free bereavement support groups for teens 13 to 18 who have experienced a significant loss.

The support group plans to meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, ending Nov. 14, at The Center for Compassionate Care, 4131 Swenson St.

The program will explore grief, loss, emotional responses to memories and events surrounding loss, and coping skills.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO HELP OTHERS

This year, the United Way is taking the lead in helping create 24 hours of service in Las Vegas on Make a Difference Day, Oct. 27.

Commit to collecting items - food, bottled water, pet food, office supplies, paper products and canned goods - for the event to help those in need. Contact the group to make sure it needs what you propose to collect.

Hands-on ideas include making quilts or fleece blankets; creating goodies or a meal to benefit a family or organization; organizing a sing-a-long or special activity at a nursing home; and creating a fun Halloween activity to benefit a group.

Outdoors ideas include organizing a cleanup or trail day in conjunction with a local or national parks organization.
