Teacher said she was ‘being silly’ when she taped students’ mouths shut

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A first-grade teacher in Wichita Falls says she was just “being silly” when she let students put duct tape on their mouths to keep them quiet.

The Wichita Falls Times Record News obtained school district documents in the investigation of Dawn Renfro. She was put on administrative leave, then resigned following the incident.

The newspaper reported Tuesday that the Zundy Elementary School teacher said she used poor judgment Jan. 21 in allowing the students to tape their mouths shut for a few minutes.

Renfro, in a letter of response the next day, said there was no malicious intent and students were not required to wear tape.

Principal Shannan Porter told Renfro that she put the students in danger.

No working telephone number could immediately be located Wednesday for Renfro.
