The Southern Hills Republican Women’s Club recently announced the winners for its third annual “We the People” essay contest.
Burkholder Middle School students Cole Miele received the gold award, Elise Bush received the silver award and Annie Killian, Shaina McCann, Madison Petrie, Jevis Dancel, and Kendyl Groth received bronze awards. Del Webb middle school students Akiya Dillon and Brandi LeAnn Nelson also received bronze awards.
The students were required to write a biography on a signer of the Declaration of Independence, something that surprised or impressed them and why they would or would not emulate the individual.

ARIZONA YOUTH GROUP MAINTAINS LAKE MEAD TRAILHEAD
The Historic Railroad Trail in Lake Mead National Recreation Area recently received another trailhead near the Hoover Dam Lodge parking lot off U.S. Highway 93 near mile marker 2.5.
A youth trail crew from the Arizona Conservation Corps worked on restoring the .3-mile spur trail for three weeks in March.
The project cost $15,000 and was funded through a grant from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation in partnership with the Bureau of Reclamation and National Park Service.

HENDERSON FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES ACCREDITATION
The Henderson Fire Department received Accredited Agency status March 17 with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International for meeting criteria established through a voluntary self-assessment and rigorous reaccreditation process.
The department has held Accredited Agency status with CFAI since 1999.
In the final report, the team highlighted several areas that exceeded industry best practices, including response programs, integrated emergency preparedness systems, public education and risk reduction programs, and arrest and conviction rates for arson.
