HENDERSON SCHOOLS WIN CHALLENGE AND RECEIVE SPECIAL VIST

More than 10,000 Clark County School District elementary school students participated in the eighth annual Coaches Challenge program aimed at helping children make healthy choices.

Galloway and Vanderburg elementary schools’ second- and fifth-graders, respectively, won the challenge and received a visit from a UNLV head coach.

The challenge was based on a point system that allowed students to earn points each day for eating fruits and vegetables and being physically active.

HENDERSON FIRE DEPARTMENT HONORS PERSONNEL AND RESIDENT

Henderson Fire Department personnel were recognized May 2 for exemplary leadership, outstanding performance and life-saving actions during an Employee Recognition and Awards Ceremony.

There were 77 first-time recipients of the Phoenix Award, which is earned for contributing to a cardiac arrest patient surviving to leave the hospital with a good neurological outcome. Firefighter Mark Merrifield, engineer Brian Michals and firefighter/paramedics Christopher Alvarez, Todd Ford, Kyle Romero and Kenneth Ramirez were recognized for contributing to five or more cardiac arrest resuscitations.

In addition, firefighter/paramedic Robert Lockwood received the Outstanding Performance Award; Captain Tim Gardner earned the Visionary Award; firefighter Brian Harris won the Customer Service Award; firefighter/paramedic Robert Uszynski received the Firefighter of the Year Medal; resident Alan Petty earned the Citizen Lifesaving Award; and Captain Gary Desch won the Jeff Mann Distinguished Service Medal.
