Urban Outfitters ‘regrets’ blood-red-stained Kent State sweatshirt

Urban Outfitters apologized Monday for selling a Kent State sweatshirt that appeared to be decorated with blood stains and bullet holes, reminiscent of the 1970 “Kent State Massacre” that left four people dead.

BuzzFeed reported on the sweatshirt after a screenshot showing the item on urbanoutfitters.com for $129 went around Twitter.

“Get it or regret it!” the description of the “vintage” sweatshirt read. The company said there was only one for sale.

As outrage over the item spread, though, the company issued an apology via Twitter.

“It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such,” the statement read in part.

The company said the stains on the shirt were discoloration as part of its “vintage” look, and the holes were from “natural wear and fray.”

It appears someone took UO up on its offer, though: The sweatshirt has been listed on eBay with a starting bid of $550.

Here’s the full text of the apology:

“Urban Outfitters sincerely apologizes for any offense our Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt may have caused. It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such.

“The one-of-a-kind item was purchased as part of our sun-faded vintage collection. There is no blood on this shirt nor has this item been altered in any way. The red stains are discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray.

“Again, we deeply regret that this item was perceived negatively and we have removed it immediately from our website to avoid further upset.”
