YOUR WEEKEND: Get out, get active, get healthy at annual walk

You've been meaning to get in shape, but now it's May, and that New Year's resolution you made is all but forgotten.

Now is your chance to blow the dust off your sneakers and get outside and get active, as the third annual Get Movin' Healthy Lifestyle Walk is planned for Saturday, May 16, with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the walk at 9:30 a.m. at Wayne Bunker Family Park.

Participation is free.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will lead walkers to a healthier lifestyle. The event has a one- or two-mile walk to choose from. Free refreshments will be provided while supplies last, and the first 150 participants will receive a free T-shirt.

"I want Las Vegas to be one of the healthiest cities in the world," Goodman said. "The city offers many great recreational opportunities. I encourage residents to take advantage of these facilities, get exercise and eat smart."

To find out more about Goodman's Healthy Lifestyle Initiative, visit www.gethealthylasvegas.org. The initiative consists of a three-point plan:

Get Smart: Diet and nutirition are essential components to a healthy lifestyle and quality of life. Educate our citizens about proper diets.

Get Up: Sedentary activities increase risk of heart disease, stroke and obesity. Educate the citizenry on importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Get Out: The mayor and City Council are supportive of parks and recreation amenities and are committed to providing quality facilities in the city of Las Vegas. Identify recreation center, parks and trails near you.

Wayne Bunker Family Park is located at Tenaya Way and Alexander Road.
