CES parent announces $100,000 in grants for Las Vegas initiatives

The Consumer Technology Association, the nonprofit agency that staged this week's massive CES, an international consumer electronics show, said it will grant $100,000 to back partnerships and programs to benefit Southern Nevada.

The group announced the initiatives in a Tuesday news conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the day before CES opened. In a statement, the association said this is the eighth straight year it has made sustainability grants to benefit valley groups and programs.

"Las Vegas has been an amazing and gracious host to CES for nearly four decades," Consumer Technology Association President Gary Shapiro said in the statement. "In turn, our commitment to the local community remains strong."

The association's latest grants include:

— $76,000 for EverFi's Future Innovators program in the Clark County Schools. The program teaches high school students to develop business plans and road maps for academic and career success. EverFi, a Washington, D.C.-based online education company founded in 2008, has partnered with businesses, nonprofits and entertainers to teach financial literacy, civic engagement and alcohol safety and other topics to more than 9 million students, The Washington Post notes.

— $14,000 for Green Our Planet's Outdoor Garden Classroom, which integrates gardens into school curriculums to promote healthy eating and environmental awareness. In 2015, the association's grant to Green Our Planet enabled the installation of 14 outdoor garden classrooms in valley schools.

— $10,000 for to help fund an electric vehicle charging station for Tuoro University's campus at 874 American Pacific Drive in Henderson. Last year, a Touro University grant helped the university replace fluorescent bulbs in exterior campus lighting fixtures with light-emitting diodes.

Previous Consumer Technology Association grant recipients have included the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for its DesertSol project, Green Chips for installing a solar energy system at Opportunity Village's Magical Forest and the Las Vegas Convention Center for an electric vehicle charging station. The association also helped fund a solar power system for the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign near the Strip.
