Transportation board approves first step in Tahoe bike path construction
CARSON CITY — The first step toward construction of a 3-mile shared-use bike path along Lake Tahoe’s east shore was approved Monday by state Transportation Department’s board of directors.
The board approved a $586,000 preconstruction contract with Granite Construction Co. for the path from Incline Village south to Sand Harbor State Park. The primary funding is a $12 million federal grant.
When other funding is added, including Nevada road funding for safety and environmental improvements, the path is expected to cost $25 million to $30 million. Private donations totaling $750,000 are part of the project as well.
The board, including Gov. Brian Sandoval, unanimously approved the contract. Work is expected to begin in late summer.
The path is expected to become a 30-mile premier shared-use bike facility along Lake Tahoe’s east side between the Nevada state line in Crystal Bay and Stateline’s casino core.
The Incline to Sand Harbor project includes parking areas and the path is expected to lead to the prohibition of parking along this portion of State Route 28, a popular summer area of the lake for residents and visitors.
