51s blast Bees, 11-6
Kirk Nieuwenhuis just rejoined the Las Vegas 51s Friday after being optioned to the minors by the New York Mets.
He wasted no time making his presence felt.
Nieuwenhuis hit a towering three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh to lead the 51s to a come-from-behind 11-6 victory over the Salt Lake Bees in the opener of a four-game series at Cashman Field.
Nieuwenhuis’ homer, his 11th of the season, gave the 51s a 8-6 advantage, and they added two more runs in the inning on an RBI single by Taylor Teagarden and a sacrifice fly by Daniel Muro. The homer came off Bonanza High graduate Kyler Newby (0-3), who gave up five runs in 1/3 of an inning and took the loss.
Nieuwenhuis finished 3-for-5 with two runs.
Las Vegas’ Allan Dykstra was 4-for-4, including a solo homer in the eighth, his 14th on the season. It was his second four-hit game of the season.
The 51s (60-48) fell behind 5-1, but got two-run homers from Andrew Brown and Josh Satin in the fifth to tie the game. It was the 17th homer of the season for Brown, and Satin’s homer was his sixth. Both shots came with two outs.
Ryan Reid threw a scoreless seventh to run his record to 4-1.
The Bees broke a 5-5 tie with two outs in the sixth on Luis Martinez’s RBI single.
Brennan Boesch hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his 16th, for Salt Lake (44-63).
The series continues at 7:05 p.m. today. The game will be Greg Maddux Bobblehead Night to honor the Las Vegas native who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame today.
