Floyd Mayweather Jr. welcomes Olympic boxer Shakur Stevenson to his team

Floyd Mayweather Jr. went to Brazil to soak in the Olympic festivities, but he was also there on business.

The retired superstar boxer announced via Twitter on Wednesday that Shakur Stevenson has joined Mayweather Promotions.

“I came all the way to Brazil to support the athletes of the United States, but while enjoying the events I had one goal in mind and that was to extend a warm welcome to @ShakurStevenson into The Money Team family,” Mayweather’s tweets read.

Stevenson, the bantamweight American, was the most coveted boxer at the Olympics. The 19-year-old Stevenson competes in the semifinals Thursday against Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin. Stevenson could become the first American to capture a gold medal since Andre Ward in 2004.

Mayweather, a Las Vegas native, was seen shouting advice at Stevenson during his quarterfinal match on Tuesday. The future Hall of Famer has quickly turned his promotional company into one of the biggest in the sport.

“I see the next Floyd Mayweather,” Mayweather said about Stevenson on Tuesday. “If anybody can break my records, this young kid right here can do it. I truly believe in him.”
