Threatened automotive program benefits area dealers

Attention car buyers: There’s still time to get in on the “cash for clunkers” rebate rush. The House hastened to refuel the program today, voting to pour in $2 billion to prop up the trade-in deals that have overwhelmed car dealers and exhausted the $1 billion the government had set aside. The Senate has yet to act, but the White House said weekend deals would count, no matter what.

Southern Nevada car dealers are expecting a wave of customers to take advantage of the program, which began July 24.

Shooting justifiable?

A Las Vegas police officer accidentally shot himself in the knee early Friday during “training” at the department’s gun range, a department spokesman said. Local oddsmakers have set their early line at 3-2 that the subsequent cornoner’s inquest will find the shooting “justifiable,” based on the officer’s preliminary testimony that the knee “made a furtive movement toward his waistband.”

Obama nominates Bogden for Nevada U.S. Attorney

President Barack Obama has nominated former Nevada U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden, who was ousted in a controversial move during the Bush administration, to retain his old post.

Hard Rock Tulsa opens Monday

Tulsa, Okla., is the home for nation’s seventh Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The former Cherokee Casino Resort has completed a $155 million facelift to become the Hard Rock Tulsa, which will be unveiled Monday.
