Apple: Free cases to alleviate iPhone 4 problems

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Inc. will give free protective cases to buyers of iPhone 4 to alleviate the “death grip” problem in which holding the phone with a bare hand can muffle the wireless signal. Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the giveaway Friday, even as Apple denied the phone has a problem that needs fixing. The more than 3 million people who bought the iPhone 4 and new buyers through Sept. 30 will all be eligible. People who already purchased the $29 “Bumper” cases will be refunded.

Old Spice ad campaign goes viral – and then some

NEW YORK — In one of the largest viral video ad campaigns ever, Old Spice is swarming YouTube. The brand released more than 180 videos featuring the campaign’s star, ex-football player Isaiah Mustafa. In the videos, he responds personally to online queries or comments from Web users, including Ellen DeGeneres and Alyssa Milano. On Friday, they accounted for eight of the most popular 11 videos on YouTube.

Ship junked 200 years ago uncovered at WTC site

NEW YORK — The ship was buried as junk two centuries ago – landfill to expand a bustling little island of commerce called Manhattan. When it re-emerged this week, surrounded by skyscrapers, it was an instant treasure that popped up from the mud near ground zero. A 32-foot piece of the vessel was found in soil 20 feet under street level, amid bulldozers excavating a parking garage for the future World Trade Center. Near the site of so many grim finds, this discovery was as unexpected as it was thrilling.

Elderly couple dies while trapped in home elevator

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — When the elevator in their home got stuck between floors, Sherwood and Caroline Wadsworth found themselves trapped with no way to call for help as temperatures rose into the 90s in the closet-sized lift until they finally died from heat exhaustion.
