In 1969, Las Vegas author and illustrator Michael Schall Johnson was pulling a telephone pole out of the Cheyenne River for the Mountain States Telephone company. As he winched the pole up a 30-foot cliff and dug it a new hole, he dreamed that he might dig up a strong box hidden by a gang of desperadoes. Now retired, Johnson revisited the area in his novel “The Bloody Road of Gold: Calamity, Wild Bill, Boone May, Courage and Romance in the Old West.” The book, which Johnson describes as “myths and truths intertwined,” follows Jack Neuman, a young man orphaned as a teen on his quest to discover the West. On March 2, preschool and kindergarten students from Merryhill Preschool, 10050 Alta Drive, celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday through a variety of activities fitting the theme of his books and incorporating science, technology, engineering, arts and math learning outcomes. Activities included making “oobleck,” or goo, similar to what falls from the sky in the book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck;” creating paper mache balloons like those in the book “Oh the Places You’ll Go;” and practicing counting with red and white blocks, reminiscent of “The Cat in the Hat.” A disc jockey played music to accompany outdoor activities, including “Pin the Tail on Horton” and “The Cat in the Hat” bean bag toss. Dr. Seuss’s birthday is National Read Across America Day. The National Education Association’s Read Across America program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnership and reading resources.
