With the ability of college athletes to make money outside of scholarships, the gap between the UNLVs and Alabamas of the world is about to widen.

UNLV said in a news release that it expected to save $1.2 million by taking such a step. The action was taken because of the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis.
The university is negotiating for a new shoe and apparel contract to replace the one with Nike that expires May 31. Nike had an exclusive negotiating window that ended April 1.
