This is my favorite week of the prep football season.
The Division I-A Southern Region playoffs begin, there are two league titles up for grabs, and all the games are Thursday because of Nevada Day.
Green Valley’s Austin Rogers has been aiming all season long to run a 3.1-mile course in less than 16 minutes. The senior finally got his wish Saturday morning in a tune-up for the postseason.
Rony Estrada’s goal with seven minutes left in the match capped a furious comeback as Foothill’s boys soccer team rallied for a 5-4 win at Silverado on Thursday.
Hannah Goddard had 10 kills and seven aces Thursday as Arbor View’s girls volleyball team swept visiting Cheyenne, 25-10, 25-14, 25-12.
Sunrise Mountain’s Miriam Mozqueda scored twice in the first half Thursday, and the Miners held on for a 3-2 win over visiting Eldorado.
Eduardo Sanchez took a short pass off a corner kick and scored the lone goal of the match with four minutes remaining Friday to lift Tech’s boys soccer team to a 1-0 win over Palo Verde in the Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic at Cimarron-Memorial.
Cimarron-Memorial senior shortstop Niko Decolati has been named the Division I Southern Nevada Player of the Year by area baseball coaches. He hit .411 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs this season for the Spartans.
Coronado junior Basia Query has been named the Southeast League”s Most Valuable Player. She hit .452 with 12 doubles and 36 RBIs for the Cougars, who won the Southeast softball title. Query floated between catcher and shortstop, depending on where her team needed her.
What happened to Bishop Gorman junior Vashti Cunningham on Saturday is the equivalent of Gordon Ramsay overcooking a steak.
