Boys Basketball
Before I can graduate, there’s some basketball to discuss. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association boys and girls state tournaments are in Reno this week, and I took a break from writing my book about the 2015 football season (“The Year of the Butt Punt”) to make the trip north and check out all the action.
Adelson School’s boys basketball team will make just its second appearance in the Division IV state tournament this week.
And the Lions will try to win their first state crown without compromising the observance of their school’s faith.
Elijah Hoye made two free throws with 29.8 seconds left to break a 50-50 tie and lift Word of Life to a 54-50 win over Adelson School in the Division IV Southern League final at Desert Pines. Both teams advance to the state tournament, which begins Friday in Reno.
The Adelson School juniors, led by forward Jake Buchman, accounted for 48 points Friday as the Lions defeated Spring Mountain, 61-52 in a Division IV Southern League semifinal at Desert Pines.
Kennedy Koehler scored 18 points, including a rebound basket in the final seconds of overtime to lift Coronado’s boys basketball team to a 54-52 road win over Eldorado on Wednesday.
Timothy Jeffries scored 27 points, including eight points in overtime, to lift Legacy’s boys basketball team to a 63-61 road win over Shadow Ridge on Tuesday.
Kyle Thaxton led a balanced attack with 13 points, and host Liberty’s boys basketball team held on for a 70-69 win over Canyon Springs on Monday.
