Jake Epstein got two transition baskets before halftime, then scored 21 second-half points to lead The Meadows to a 63-54 win in the Division III boys state basketball semifinals at UNR’s Lawlor Events Center. The Meadows (26-3) plays Yerington (26-3) in the title game at 12:50 p.m. Saturday.
Before I can graduate, there’s some basketball to discuss. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association boys and girls state tournaments are in Reno this week, and I took a break from writing my book about the 2015 football season (“The Year of the Butt Punt”) to make the trip north and check out all the action.
The Mustangs opened the game on a 14-0 run, and Mountain View never threatened as The Meadows rolled to a 60-39 win over the Saints in the Division III Southern League tournament title game at Desert Pines.
The Mustangs were 12-0 in the Division III Southern League, and all four of its remaining games were at home. But The Meadows dropped two consecutive games to make things interesting before finally closing out the title with a 66-51 home win over Mountain View on Saturday.
Luke Bergen scored 14 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer from the right wing with eight seconds to go Friday to lift Faith Lutheran’s boys basketball team to a 73-72 win over visiting Mojave.
Carl Crayon scored 23 points, including a go-ahead layup with six seconds left to lift Eldorado’s boys basketball team to a 61-58 road win over Rancho on Tuesday.
Freshman Daniel Plummer drained the go-ahead shot with six seconds remaining, and visiting Agassi Prep survived a frantic finish to earn a 60-59 win over The Meadows before a standing-room-only crowd.
Timothy Jeffries scored 27 points, including eight points in overtime, to lift Legacy’s boys basketball team to a 63-61 road win over Shadow Ridge on Tuesday.
