Silverado senior Zakee Washington on Monday announced via Twitter his commitment to run track and field at Arizona next season.
The Skyhawks seemingly contend for a state team title every five years, and Saturday was no different as they overcame injuries and wintry conditions to claim the championship at the Division I state track and field meet at Carson High.
Nick Tapuala won the discus at the Division I state track and field meet with a mark of 178 feet, 9 inches despite unfavorable conditions at Carson High and became the third Liberty thrower to take home a state title in the event since 2011.
Las Vegas High’s James took first in the 100-meter dash in 10.69 seconds and won the 200 in 21.66. He also ran a leg on two state-qualifying relay teams, as the Wildcats finished second in the 400 relay and third in the 800 relay.
Vernon Jackson won the long jump with ease with an effort of 23-2, and Silverado’s boys track team scored 43 points to take a 15-point lead over Green Valley after the first day of the Division I Sunrise Region meet at Del Sol.
Silverado’s Zakee Washington, a transfer from Palo Verde, is the top-ranked boys 400 meter runner in the state and has enjoyed a record-breaking stretch over the past few weeks.
Basic’s Frank Harris cleared 7 feet, ¼ inch in the high jump Tuesday to lead Basic’s boys track team to victory in a three-team home meet.
Alexis Gourrier won three individual events Saturday to lead Centennial’s girls track and field team to the championship at the Skyhawk Invitational at Silverado.
Nikolas Bracken finished first in three events Tuesday to lead Bishop Gorman’s boys track team to victory in a three-team home meet.
Musio Jimenez-Vazquez won two distance events Tuesday to lead the Sunrise Mountain boys track team to victory in a three-team meet at Western.
Nicholas Jacobsen and Sawyer Epstein took the top two places in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs Wednesday to help host Palo Verde’s boys track team to victory in a three-team meet.
Robert Daseler and Haskell Garrett each won two individual events Tuesday to help the Bishop Gorman boys track team to a 75-57 win at Bonanza.
