A shoe falling off and a down day from its best runner dropped Centennial to second place at the Class 4A state cross country meet Saturday at Craig Ranch Park.
Daniel Ziems ran a personal-record time of 15 minutes, 38 seconds — the third-best 5,000-meter time in the state this season — at last week’s Sunset Region cross country championship meet to qualify for Saturday’s Class 4A state meet.
Pahrump Valley’s Bryce Odegard and Boulder City’s Sierra Selinger won the individual 3A titles as Tech won both team events.
Centennial junior Alexis Gourrier won the Sunset regional cross country championship and helped the Bulldogs to the team title.

Durango’s Frankie Bisacky finished the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 56.7 seconds to win the Southwest League title on Saturday at Basic.
Basic’s Raquel Chavez passed Green Valley’s Mia Smith’s at the 300-meter mark of the 3.1-mile race and never looked back to win the Sunrise Region girls cross country title Saturday morning at Basic.
Centennial’s boys cross country team had three of the top six runners on Monday to win the Bud O’Dea Classic freshman race at Desert Breeze.

Omar Rubio led the way, as he once again edged Arbor View’s Ian Jackson at the end to win the 3.1-mile race. Rubio sprinted away in the final 300 meters to win in 16 minutes, 24.4 seconds. Jackson finished second in 16:26.9.
