To give rooms life, you may be better off red

Every year, we paint the holidays red. The color seems to be everywhere, not just on Santa’s suit or on Rudolph’s bright nose. This is a Christmas story of how I came to embrace the color red and change my life at the same time.

It’s time to gauge the clock

The sound of chimes ringing 12 times at midnight blends with the “10, 9, 8 …” chant that ushers in the new year. Today we may watch the year change on a TV screen, but in years past the celebration was timed by a chiming grandfather clock.

Protect your plants from freezing temperatures

The freeze is coming. Remember that the coldest is just before dawn. Clear, cloudless skies are more likely to give us lower temperatures and freezing; windy cold is worse than just cold. Cover tender plants before you go to bed and uncover them when it is no longer freezing.

Looking to 2015 and climbing the ladder of ecoawareness

Reflection is common at the end of the year. Reviewing the Green Living columns for 2014 led me to take stock of almost nine years of consecutive biweekly publication. This is column number 232. Their purpose is to plant seeds of awareness that will grow into positive change in our community. The fruit of those seeds will nourish future generations. It is part of my green dream.
