We’ve reached the unofficial halfway point of the prep football season, and I’m ready to hand out the Fieldies. My midseason awards usually include a free lunch and a T-shirt for the winners, but I’m saving money for a new pair of Jordans, so no dice this year.

I have been pretty rough on Silverado over the years. The Skyhawks have been the punch line numerous times in this space. But in honor of Yom Kippur this week, it’s time to atone for my mistakes. Here goes (clears throat): I’m sorry, Skyhawks.

Liberty’s defense took its lumps the first two weeks of the football season, yielding 99 points to a pair of Hawaiian powers.
Centennial’s offense has been pretty explosive this season, as the Bulldogs have averaged 35 points and scored on seven plays of 25 or more yards in the first three weeks. But the third-ranked Bulldogs (3-0) probably don’t want to get into a shootout when they host No. 2 Liberty (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.
If you saw me at school this week, you probably noticed the huge smile on my face and the extra bounce in my step. No, I didn’t get a date for homecoming yet, but I’m still feeling quite chipper. That’s what happens when you correctly predict seven out of eight prep football games like I did last week.

Liberty looked like a clear underdog going into Friday’s game with Mililani High, the defending Hawaii state champion and the state’s top-ranked team. But the game instead turned into one of the Patriots’ biggest victories and a showcase for their all-everything junior, Ethan Dedeaux.
Legacy football coach John Isola watched the highlight film from Derriyon Shaw’s junior season and thought the transfer from Sugar Hill, Ga., was a talented player. But Isola needed to see it with his own eyes.
