Celebrating souls: Winchester Cultural Center festival to mark Day of the Dead Nov. 1-2

Death is an inevitable part of life but that does not mean it is something that should be feared. In Mexican culture, death is viewed as a normal part of life to be celebrated and respected. That is the idea behind Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. In order to bring the festivities to Las Vegas, the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Drive, is scheduled to present the 13th annual Life in Death: Day of the Dead Festival from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 1-2.

Former Lt. Gov. Dr. Lonnie Hammargren is scheduled to open his Hammargren Home of Nevada History, 4318 Ridgecrest Drive, from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 2-3.

Literary Las Vegas: “The Momentaer” by Patrick Cristobal

“The Momentaer” is the sequel to the 2010 novel “The Orbiter,” written by UNLV student Patrick Cristobal. Sixteen years after Pierre Zeyfur stopped Lance Torrent from ruling the universe, Zeyfur’s daughter, Claire, has her own adventure. She finds a watch, the Momentaer, which allows her to travel through time. Unable to remove the watch and with only three months left before it kills her, Claire endeavors to remove the deadly contraption on a journey through time.
