Around 70 students, teachers and local advocates gathered outside of Rancho High School Wednesday afternoon, sharing stories of their run-ins with DACA and calling on American citizens to support immigrants.
Twelve high school students, each facing a laptop and timer on a chair, sat poised in a classroom at UNLV. Matt Gomez, the debate lab leader, instructed the students to set the timer for five minutes and pull up the lengthy evidence files on their screens.
It’s no secret Nevada schools are doing poorly, “remaining at the bottom of all those lists,” but that’s not the entire picture, said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dale Erquiaga on Wednesday. The truth is even worse than the stats would have you believe, he added.
